Surveys

Lake surveys are conducted by Lake Management District volunteers during the weed growth cycle, normally from 9-11a.m. between April and August of each year, using their own equipment to determine location and density of invasive nuisance and native aquatic, floating and terrestrial vegetation.  The information gathered is recorded and reported to the Lake Management District Steering Committee and used to meet Thurston County “Integrated Pesticide Management (IPM”)guidance,  Thurston County “Prescription” and Washington State Department of Ecology “Aquatic Plant and Algae Management (APAM)” permit requirements.

Control options are digging/hand pulling, placing down weed blankets, harvesting, mechanical rotovating, diver dredging, education (https://www.youtube.com/@lakelawrence , herbicides.  Herbicides are always the last option if all others have been previously used and found not to be effective.  A “Prescription”, approved by the County, details the steps and action level thresholds that must be met in order for herbicides to be used.  We encourage everyone to learn more about the extensive measures taken to monitor, study, evaluate and make these important decisions.  Come to LMD meetings to learn more about the decision criteria and schedule with our survey chair, Barry Halverson, to participate in a lake survey.
